Privacy Policy
Last updated
This policy explains what personal data appica.dev collects, why, who else handles it, how long we keep it, and the rights you have over it.
Who is responsible
Roman Kalinin trading as Appica is the controller of the personal data described here, at 209A Upton Road South, Bexley, DA5 1RG, United Kingdom. Write to support@appica.dev about anything in this policy.
When you buy
Purchases are processed by Polar Software, Inc. (“Polar”), our merchant of record. Polar collects your name, email, billing address, payment details and, where you give one, your tax ID, and handles them as an independent controller under its own privacy policy. We never see your card details.
Polar sends us a record of each order. We keep it in our database: your email, what you bought, the amount, currency and status, Polar's ids for the order, the customer and the license key, and the order as Polar sent it, which includes your name and billing address. We use it to deliver what you bought, answer support requests, handle refunds, tell you about updates to products you own, and keep the business records UK tax law requires. The legal bases are the performance of our contract with you, our legitimate interest in keeping our own record of sales, and our legal obligations.
When you subscribe to updates
If you enter your email in a newsletter form, we store that address and nothing else, to send you news about Appica products. The legal basis is your consent; every email lets you unsubscribe, or write to support@appica.dev and we'll remove you. Emails are sent with Gmail, Google's email service.
When you browse
- Hosting. Vercel, which hosts the site, processes your IP address and request details to serve pages and keep the service secure, and keeps them in short-lived logs.
- Analytics. Vercel Web Analytics counts page views without cookies. It tells visits apart with an identifier derived from the request, which is discarded after 24 hours, and we only see totals.
- Advertising measurement. Only if you accept marketing cookies, the X (Twitter) pixel tells X that you visited and which ads led you here, under X's privacy policy. You can withdraw at any time with Cookie settings in the footer.
Cookies and local storage
- appica-consent remembers your cookie choice, for 180 days. Essential.
- appica-integration remembers which framework you read the UI library docs in, for 1 year. Essential.
- Local storage keeps your light or dark mode and the docs' theme settings in your browser. It never leaves your device. Essential.
- _twclid, _twpid and _twsid are set by the X pixel, only with your consent to marketing cookies.
Who processes data for us
- Vercel Inc. (USA): hosting, analytics, and the storage that keeps newsletter addresses.
- Google LLC (USA): email, through Gmail, for support and newsletters.
- Neon, LLC (USA), a Databricks company: the database that keeps order records, hosted in London, UK.
- Polar Software, Inc. (USA): payments, receipts, downloads and license keys, as an independent controller.
- X Corp. (USA): advertising measurement, only with your consent.
Some of these companies are in the USA. Vercel, Google, X and Neon (through its parent, Databricks) take part in the UK Extension to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, so transfers to them rely on the UK's adequacy regulations for the USA. Polar receives your details from you directly at checkout, as an independent controller. Where any other transfer needs it, we use the safeguards UK law provides, such as the ICO's International Data Transfer Agreement or Addendum.
How long we keep it
- Order records: for as long as we provide downloads and updates for the product you bought, and in any case for 6 years after the end of the tax year of the purchase, since UK tax law requires business records to be kept for at least 5 years after the 31 January filing deadline.
- Newsletter addresses: until you unsubscribe.
- Support emails: as long as we need them to help you, and no longer than the order they concern.
Your rights
You can ask us for a copy of your data, to correct it, to delete it, to restrict or object to how we use it, or to receive it in a portable format. Write to support@appica.dev; we answer within 1 month. Some data, such as order records we must keep for tax purposes, can't be deleted before its retention period ends. If you are unhappy with our answer, you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk or to the data protection authority where you live.
Changes
We update this policy when what we collect or who processes it changes, and the date at the top shows the latest version. See also the terms of sale.
